HamJam Speakers for 2025 - our 16th year!

NFARL and our sponsors are pleased to present an event to raise funds that will be used to encourage youth to get involved in amateur radio and its related STEM technologies.

The event is open to all and admission is FREE to attend thanks to your generosity in purchasing raffle tickets.

This year's speakers will be talking about some of the various programs that are supported by the NFARL YESA (Youth Education, Scholarship and Education) Program. All funds raised by HamJam go directly into the YESA fund and are used exclusively to benefit youth involved with amateur radio.

Presentations begin at 9:00AM.

We have a great team of speakers again this year:

We’re excited to announce that Mike VA3MW will be presenting an exclusive overview of the brand-new Aurora transceiver from FlexRadio Systems. Known for pushing the boundaries of software-defined radio, the Aurora promises to deliver next-level performance combined with the flexibility and precision that Flex operators expect. Mike will guide us through everything that makes this new product a game-changer for amateur radio enthusiasts.

Mike’s extensive experience as both an operator and FlexRadio advocate means he brings a unique perspective to this presentation. He’ll cover the technical innovations built into the Aurora, from its streamlined design to its powerful signal processing capabilities. His insights will help you understand not only the specs but also how the Aurora’s features translate into real-world operating advantages.

Be sure to join us for Mike VA3MW’s presentation and discover how the Aurora can elevate your ham radio experience.

Mike was licensed in 1974 and has always loved technology.  His first ‘real’ job with IBM working on an actual Tube computer that had 64,000 tubes in NORAD that was 600ft underground at the height of the cold war.
From Repeaters, HF, HF Contesting, Satellites, and starting is currently tinkering in EME digital modes and 10Ghz microwave.  As well as being a GA Pilot, he loves HF Station integration, and remote HF operation and currently represents FlexRadio Systems with the Marketing and Education team.  He is very well-versed in FlexRadio technology.  Technology is truly his hobby.

Severe weather poses a significant threat to our amateur radio stations. Even during extreme events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, or wildfires, we may be called upon to provide lifesaving emergency communications.  To meet these critical challenges, our stations must remain operable despite Mother Nature’s fury.

The creation of a protection scheme will allow your radio equipment to survive, even a direct strike.  Achieving this level of protection is possible, although it requires meticulous attention to detail.  The rules are clear and examples are contained in the book, available here on this website.

I started my work carrier as a mainframe computer programmer in 1965.  After a short time in application development, I assumed the responsibility of maintaining the mainframe operating system, developing utilities, and attending conferences.  After about ten years, I went to work for the mainframe manufacturer’s government division managing software and graduating to project management doing classified projects.  After about another ten years I transitioned to the commercial side of the house and continued to manage large complex computer system creation and installation.

In parallel with the commercial work, I had an opportunity to start a distribution company based on the PolyPhaser product line as developed by my brother, Roger.  Fortunately for me, Roger spent an extraordinary amount of time educating me and having me learn from some of his consulting activities.  Over time I became competent with my own consulting practice.  WR Block & Associates was recently closed after thirty-one years.

Wes Lamboley W3WL

DX 101 serves as an introduction to the world of DX and also provides information on improving your techniques while chasing DX. Included are some comments based on my own experience whilst on DXpeditions.

Wes got into ham radio in high school, and it lead to a career in electronics and aerospace. He retired from Boeing after 37 years. Wes was a team member of 5 DXpeditions of the Year ( XR0Y, VK0IR, A52A, FT5XO and VP8ORK) and also was a member of the VP8THU, VP8GEO VP8ORK and D68C teams. Wes is now very active in encouraging youth to consider STEM via ham radio as a hobby, and chairs the North Fulton Amateur Radio League's "HamJam" gathering (see hamjam.nfarl.org for more information), where all the proceeds go for youth education, scholarships, and activities.
